Eternal Hope and a New Perspective
“The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” — Lamentations 3:24
What kind of hope are you holding onto?
The word hope is often used casually:
“I hope it doesn’t rain.”
“I hope I get the job.”
“I hope things work out.”
Worldly hope is often just a wish—a longing for a good outcome that can’t be guaranteed.
It rises and falls with circumstances and emotions.
When circumstances change, as they always do, that kind of hope fades quickly.
The Bible speaks of a different kind of hope.
A lasting hope.
A living hope.
A hope not rooted in chance, but in the unchanging character and promises of God.
Worldly Hope: Fragile and Fleeting
The hope that this world has is uncertainty dressed up as optimism.
And when the things hoped for don’t come to pass, it can lead to disappointment, fear, and often despair.
Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick...”
When hope is placed in things that can shift, fade, or fail, the heart grows weary, and our perspectives can become narrow.
We start seeing what’s only directly in front of us.
That’s when hope feels fragile, because it is.
Biblical Hope: Anchored in Christ
The hope we find in Jesus Christ is radically different.
It’s not uncertain or unstable.
It’s a sure and steadfast anchor for the soul.
Hebrews 6:19 says,“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.”
This hope doesn’t rise and fall with emotions or circumstances.
It doesn’t depend on job security, physical health, or relationships.
It is rooted in something deeper and Someone greater.
1 Peter 1:3 calls it a “lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
This means our hope is alive because He is alive.
Jesus conquered death, and in Him, we are promised eternal life.
That’s a hope that changes everything.
Perspective Changes Everything
The difference between worldly and biblical hope comes down to the Gospel and our perspective of eternity.
When we look at life through the lens of our circumstances or what’s happening in the world around us, hope seems fragile and fleeting.
But when we look at life through the lens of Jesus Christ and His eternal promises, our perspectives change.
Romans 8:18 gives us this eternal perspective:
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
Having an eternal perspective changes how we see life.
When our hope is in Christ, we begin to see that our trials are temporary, and His promises are eternal.
Hope in Christ gives us eyes to see beyond our current circumstances.
We are no longer tossed by every storm because we know Who holds the boat.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 says, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen...”
How Do We Find Hope in Christ?
If you’re wondering how to find this kind of hope, it’s found through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
The penalty for sin is separation from God forever.
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death…”
Not just physical death, but eternal separation from God in hell.
But the Good News is this: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and willingly died in your place.
He took the punishment you deserved and paid for it in full on the cross.
Three days later, He rose again, proving His power over sin and death.
Through Him, you can be forgiven and receive the gift of eternal life.
Ephesians 2:8–9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
So, how do you receive this gift of hope and salvation?
You must admit you’re a sinner, that you’ve broken God’s law and need His forgiveness.
You must understand the penalty for your sin.
You must believe that Jesus died, was buried, and rose again for you.
You must trust in Christ ALONE as your Saviour.
This is where lasting hope is found.
When we believe in Jesus Christ, it’s the assurance that heaven is our home, and this life is just a season—a season to make Him known by sharing this life-changing Gospel message with those around you.
If You’re a Believer but Feel Hopeless…
Even those who know Christ can sometimes lose sight of the hope we have in Christ and instead, focus on the problems going on around us.
That’s when we need to shift our perspectives back to eternal things.
Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Don’t just focus on what’s right in front of you—choose to direct your thoughts toward what is true, eternal, and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
Turn your eyes to what God has promised and let Scripture reframe your thinking.
Romans 15:13 says, “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
When you feel down or hopeless, meditate on the promises of God.
Biblical hope is not blind optimism.
It’s trust in God’s Word.
Hope in this world can feel like sand slipping through your fingers.
But hope in Christ is like standing on a solid rock.
It’s not shallow.
It’s not temporary.
It’s not uncertain.
It is alive.
It is anchored.
It is eternal.
As we live in this temporary home, let us be reminded of 1 Corinthians 15:58:
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
